PBS Fall season: personal reminder
"Masterpiece Mystery!" closes out its summer run with "The Ruby in the Smoke" (Sept. 21) and "The Shadow in the North" (Sept. 28), starring Billie Piper ("Secret Diary of a Call Girl") as feisty female sleuth Sally Lockhart in these two adaptations of Philip Pullman's popular novels.
Masterpiece Contemporary: The Last Enemy (Oct. 5): This five-hour thriller provides a cautionary tale of a post-Sept. 11, 2001, society in which "ordinary citizens will become the enemy, the last enemy," according to scriptwriter Peter Berry. The series stars Benedict Cumberbatch ("Atonement") as a mathematician caught up in the aftermath of the death of his brother (Max Beesley) over stolen information.
Masterpiece Contemporary: God on Trial (Nov. 9): This drama centers on a group of Jews in the Auschwitz concentration camp on the night before they are to be put to death. They ask themselves the age-old question: How can God allow this to happen? Stellan Skarsgard, Dominic Cooper, Antony Sher, Rupert Graves and Stephen Dillane star.
Don't know that I can handle Shadow in the North. I still remember being very upset with Philip Pullman for how he ended that one. Plus Billie Piper really sucks as Sally Lockhart. But it's JJ, and I adore JJ, and I just don't know.
