Bluster - this one is my present! And it's very cool. It's Verse fic, not canon fic, and looks at a couple of fur traders in New France - with Dragons. It's everything I love about this fandom, the expansion of the universe to look at ways historical development might have been affected, but with a focus on what it's doing for individuals rather than big picture impacts.
Noble Experiments - This one does much the same thing, but pulls canon characters into the future. The author sees a comparison between the status of dragons and the status of women in the period in which Novik writes, and she pulls that into a comparison of the American and British roads to female suffrage, focusing on a British delegation to Chicago in the 1920s. This is nerdfic of the highest order.
When we have awesome nerdfic, why is the rest composed of slash? I don't read Laurence slash because it's Laurence - he just isn't going to go there. But the nerdfic, oh, the nerdfic! Thank you, fandom, even if I still want Emily/Demane :)
