Amadeus is awesome. Because it is Amadeus. With Ed Gero as Salieri, so how was it not going to be awesome?
The one piece of casting I was really unsure about going in was Sasha Olinick as Mozart: I'm used to Tom Hulce back in the 80s when he was very attractive, and Sasha Olinick is not in that mold. But it worked: in costume and in character, Olinick is not skinny and has kind of a piggy face, so that instead of having a beautiful shell to go with his beautiful product but an unmatched corrupted soul (from Salieri's POV), you have a body and soul that match, so the music is completely out of nowhere.
Laura C. Harris was adorable as Stanzi. I like Stanzi - she's smarter than she lets on, and Harris was adorable while still letting that through. Floyd had an easy job of it, I suspect, as Emperor Joseph, unless he actually speaks French better than the character does :) I think that was my favourite scene with the Emperor: his bad French and Mozart's fawning perfect fluency in the language.
Unfortunately, we went to a Sunday matinee because that's when we could work it in, so we were surrounded by dying old people. And an asshole next to us who couldn't wait for the stage manager or whoever to finish announcing that there would be a talkback, oh no, he had to push past us so he could get that empty front row seat for the talkback. *facepalm* I hate people.
But really, Amadeus is awesome because it is Amadeus. I'm thrilled to finally see a production, that this was a fantastic production, and that it was Ed Gero as Salieri. It's one of those things where awesome was expected and awesome was achieved. And the set was gorgeous - much more impressive than expected. I don't go to Round House often, as the shows they select are usually not a top priority to me, but I've enjoyed the productions of theirs I have seen. Very excited for Next Fall next season (and Mark Ramont is directing that one, too).
