I should stay away from bookstores
Aug. 5th, 2008 08:42 pmSo, I finally called Graham Staffing and went in and am in the process of getting put back on the roster so I can have something to do other than sit at home and angst over job adverts. And because that had me done by 2:30, and it wasn't really worth coming home before going back out for job search group at 6, I wandered up to Dupont, got yogurt at tangysweet (mmmm), and of course ended up at the Dupont location of Second Story.
I was good, sort of. I didn't buy the Louis Blanc bio. I did however, find this shiny: Figures of Ill Repute: Representing Prostitution in Nineteenth Century France. It is shiny. The first chapter is all about Parent-Duchatelet and how his work on prostitution has creepy analytical modes in common with his work on the sewer system, then it goes into representations of prostitution in art and literature through the rest of the century. I'm on chapter two, about Balzac and Sue and the phenomenon of the prostitute with the heart of gold and how she is always deliberately excluded from reintegration into society.
Also, I got a copy of the Amadeus script. I managed to walk out with only two things!
Now, I get to angst over my cover letter to the German Marshall Fund, trying to get them to hire me as a program assistant. We have established that I suck at cover letters; now we are attempting to fix up this draft to prove that yes, I can write, really! Hate applying for jobs, but really want this one. It would involve domestic and international travel. Oh poor me, I might have to go to the Paris office :)
I should probably say something about Saturday, which was terribly fun, but really, the most fun thing was getting to see James Gardiner again, since I again chickened out of saying anything to Will Gartshore, on whom I still have a massive crush. Please, Eric, let him be involved in the Christmas show I'm not supposed to know about! But it was so lovely to see James, and seeing him do a duet with Erin, and he gave Kristin and me hugs and kisses on the cheek, and it was all so nice. I haven't seen actorboys in ages, and actorboys are nice. Of course, I get to see Maxie and Ali in a couple weeks, and then Doug and Natascia, and then LM at Wolf Trap, and then good news casting-wise for R&J - Jeff Kuhn is coming down, and Ted van Griethuysen is playing Friar Lawrence, so some total awesomeness there. Fall is coming up quickly.
Also, this weekend, I *gasp* wrote and posted a new chapter of The Blood of the Martyrs! I don't think I've touched that particular fic in a couple of years. And now I'm picking at a New Amsterdam fic, since I'm getting plot bunnies from The Embarrassment of Riches. None of this helps me get a job, though.
I hate cover letters.
